Job Description

The Biomedical Scientist within the Virology service with the UKHSA will be responsible for the efficient day-to-day running of an area in a section of the laboratory, rotating through all sections, supervising and training staff, and participating in national/international responses to disease outbreaks.

Responsibilities

  • Work competently in all sections of the Virology Laboratory.
  • Perform and designate a range of testing on various samples.
  • Be aware of anomalous results and report them appropriately.
  • Process clinical specimens and interpret results in accordance with SOPs.
  • Organise work in the laboratory area and keep up to date with SOP changes.
  • Interpret and report on routine and specialist virology tests.
  • Assist in the production and dissemination of laboratory reports.
  • Process and interpret NEQAS samples.
  • Ensure work is performed at the appropriate Containment level.

Qualifications

  • State registered Biomedical Scientist.
  • 3+ years post-registration experience in Virology with a completed training portfolio.
  • Experience with a Laboratory Information System (LIM).
  • Good understanding of basic theoretical and practical microbiology.
  • Ability to work unsupervised in all areas of a Virology laboratory.
